Class C Commercial Driver’s License
The class C commercial driving license (CDL) which is also known as a trucker’s permit, has a broad range of vehicle types. It is among the most flexible CDLs. It can be used for everything from recreational vehicles and buses to passenger vehicles and hazardous transportation vehicles.
With a class C, you can operate straight boxes, trucks, dump trucks, and buses designed to hold 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
Passenger Vehicles
New York drivers can choose from a range of license classes. These classes are tailored to suit different driving styles and vehicle types. Understanding the different classes is important, whether you’re planning to drive down Broadway in your parents 1986 Toyota Corolla, or pilot trucks through the Adirondacks.
If you are looking to drive passenger vehicles, such as sedans and station wagons the class C non-CDL license is the best option. This license allows you to drive a single car with the maximum GVWR of 26,001 pounds. You may also tow vehicles that have a maximum trailer weight of 10,000 pounds. Drivers can add endorsements to their class C licenses for increased employment opportunities. These endorsements could include passengers (P) tanks (T) or hazardous materials (H). These endorsements are usually added by passing additional knowledge tests and special test of skills.
The maximum number of passengers that can be transported in a vehicle for passengers with a class C non CDL license is 16, including the driver. Drivers must also limit the number of minors they transport to one unless those being transported are family members of the immediate family or over 18. Teen drivers under the age of 18 who are licensed with a class C license must have at least one parent or guardian present in the vehicle at all times.
To get a class C non-CDL driver’s license, you must be at least 18 years old and pass a medical exam to be eligible to drive. You must also comply with federal regulations if you intend to drive on the interstate or transport hazardous materials.

Combination Vehicles

You must pass a medical examination and undergo a background examination which includes a criminal history check, to qualify for an official Class C license. You must also pass a drug test. Some states may require you to complete driver’s education or training in truck safety before they can issue a CDL.
There are other requirements that you must satisfy in order to drive a vehicle with a class-C license. Some of these restrictions are age-based and others are determined by the type of vehicle or number of passengers you’re carrying. For instance, certain states will not allow you to carry non-family passengers younger than 21 years old while others restrict the number of non-family passengers to a maximum of one.
You can add endorsements to your California class C license, such as the P-passenger and T-double or triple-trailer endorsements. In order to add these endorsements, you must passing a second knowledge test, and sometimes an additional test of skills.
Towing Vehicles
A category C + E license is one of the most comprehensive HGV licences that you can get that allows drivers to operate a range of large vehicles and trailers. This includes double and single trailer vehicles with a maximum authorized mass (MAM), up to 8,250kg. It also permits drivers to drive articulated vehicles like coaches and lorries as well as the more basic drawbar vehicle referred to as an tipper or artic truck.
Drivers with a category C license can also operate small commercial vehicles such as vans or trucks. They can also operate straight or box trucks, dump trucks and straight trucks. They can also operate buses that can carry 16 or more passengers for hire and vehicles that transport hazardous materials, provided they hold the proper endorsements.
Tow truck drivers are another group that requires the category C license. Tow truck operators usually use tow trucks that have an GVWR that is less than 26,001 pounds. They are able to tow other vehicles, as long as the vehicle’s GVWR is less than or equal to the towtruck.
If the tow truck has a GVWR more than 26,001 pounds or the driver plans to transport passengers or dangerous material or hazardous materials, then they’ll require an upgrade to a higher level CDL. There are two levels of licenses for operators of tow trucks, level 1 and level 2. Level 2 certification requires at minimum one year experience as the driver of a vehicle. This certification is required to operate vehicles that exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR, even if they aren’t towing or carrying passengers in exchange for compensation.
Drivers with an a Category C license can also obtain an additional license, called a “T endorsement” that allows them to drive double- or triple-trailer vehicles. They must pass a written and practical test, as in addition to an assessment of their driving ability. This is an optional add-on to the category C licence and certain employers only require their drivers to possess a T licence for certain jobs. Some drivers opt to obtain it to increase their chances in the field, and to demonstrate that they are able to operate a more complex vehicle.
Hazardous Materials
A Class C commercial driver’s license is required to operate any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver. This includes vehicles that transport hazardous substances, or HazMat. In addition to passenger vans and smaller HAZMAT vehicles, this category includes vehicles that are used for general freight transport, including trucks that have rated tanks. The class C CDL owner must have an endorsement for tanks. They may also have to pass a hazard material knowledge test.
Hazardous materials include any chemical, explosive gas, or other substance that is classified as hazardous under 49 CFR Part 172. It is defined as any substance that creates a substantial threat of death, serious injury or property damage that is severe or a significant risk to the health, safety or welfare of persons or the environment. It is transported by an alternative vehicle to an airplane, rail vehicle or vessel. Any department, agency, or instrumentality of the United States or a State that transports hazardous substances is considered to be a carrier.
The DOT has created specific rules for the transport of hazardous substances. These rules establish the requirements for shipping labels, papers placards, labels and other topics. A driver who violates these rules is liable for a DOT violation and could be subject to penalties and fines.
